VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
February 2011:
Janet Lutkus
Janet, who lives in Bennington, NH. Has been a wonderful volunteer since 2003! Janet is:
- Devoted and diligent in whatever task she undertakes.
- Kind and caring to our program dogs, personal dogs, and their people.
- Always present, with Cleo NERR 1453, the Ambassadog, at the monthly RD's held at the Keene, NH. PETCO. Always helpful in with dealing with the public there. She is diplomatic and tactful when situations arise there. She is funny, and friendly. Has a great sense of humor and a lively mind! At RD's she has much fun and enjoys dealing with the public.
- A wonderful Foster Mom to Cleo NERR 1453, who goes above and beyond for this lovely dog. Whether it is to take Cleo to her appointments at NEVOG (New England Veterinary Oncology Group) in Waltham, MA. A long drive, especially in this horrible weather of late. Never a word of complaint, from her or Cleo, as she has fared well after her radiation and Melanoma vacc. treatments. What a dynamic duo!
- Very compassionate, she is always offering to help. Whether for transport, sending dog food to other program dogs, RD's, fostering or even helping with fellow NERR volunteer computer issues that may arise.
- Talented with her computer and design skills. She is very creative and is modest about them! As a technical writer by profession she does have a way with words! She has taken care of hand-outs, printed updates and such for our RD's when others could not and always happy to do so.
- Trustworthy and Compassionate. Compassionate!! Did we say compassionate?? She cares for foster Cleo, in a loving manner, giving her the best possible. As a vegetarian she even purchases and cooks up special meals for Cleo, because of her cancer needs. And not
once has ever complained about cooking up the turkey or hamburger meat
in conjunction to the yams etc. that comprise the gourmet meals.
- Loyal. As a volunteer it is evident over the years that Janet will be there when you need her. She will call if she is running late and if she says she'll take on a task/duty she follows thru till completion.
She has had dogs for many years, of different breeds, but Rottweilers have been an important part of her life. She adopted (in Oct. 2008) and loved, Xada NERR 1442. A sweet, loving gal who was a special dog. Alas, Xada lost her battle with cancer (bone) on Feb. 26, 2010. A loss that was so profound, especially since the diagnosis and her final departure from this Earth was so swift and hard to comprehend. This being the anniversary of her passing, it is also fitting to include beloved Xada for February's honors, along with her Mom Janet.
Xada was the love of her life and evidence of her is prevalent in Janet's cozy NH house. From a coffee cup with her embossed picture upon it, to the numerous toys Xada cherished and played with and ripped up, beheaded and delimbed with great joy and relish! The same tpys that Cleo now drags around the house, upstairs and down.
And, as painful as this journey was, having no dog in her life after Xada went to the Rainbow Bridge, Janet continued to step up to be at RD's and offered to help with foster dogs whenever necessary. And thus, when the time was right, Cleo became her foster. NERR knew that Cleo was in the right home. And finally a smile is back on Janet's face in having a canine in her world again.
In conclusion, it is fitting to have Janet chosen as the VOM due to all the many reasons listed!
NERR is thankful for all you DO !!! Many Congratulations!
January 2011:
Michele Scarpa
Please join me in congratulating Michele Scarpa as the first volunteer of the month for the new year! Michele resides in Connecticut joined NERR&R way back in May 2002. Shortly after joining she began doing evaluations, fostering (which she happily failed a few times!) and then went on to become the Foster Coordinator. She served as the Foster Coordinator for many years until recently passing the torch. Michele has done an outstanding job as a temperament evaluator for NERR and other rescues. Though evaluating is not one of her favorite jobs she knows it is a job that needs to be done. The evaluator is the person who is responsible for identifying the safest, most temperamentally sound Rottweilers for our foster and adoptive families to take into their homes. Evaluating can be exhausting, heartbreaking and physically dangerous as there is always the potential for being bitten. The evaluation includes performing a number of tests to judge the temperament and character of the dog including actually physically forcing the unknown dog down to the floor. It is not a job for the faint of heart and we are thankful for her hard work and dedication! Just the other month, NERR received three owner surrender applications from Connecticut; two of the dogs had a very short timeline. Michele was able to travel to the owners' homes and evaluate all three dogs. Her evaluation documentation was detailed, clear and very descriptive which helped NERR place the dogs into appropriate foster homes quickly. Two of the dogs have been adopted by their foster homes. Michele's ability, experience and intuition resulted in the temporary placement of one dog for further evaluation. That dog immediately proved she belongs in our program and that Michele's assessment of her character was right on. And that, as I'm sure Michele would tell you, is a wonderful feeling.
Thanks Michele, not only for being a great volunteer but for your contributions to NERR's Evaluation Team as well!
We are thankful for all you do!
