How to Set Up a Rottweiler Day!
First and foremost, find a place! Contact your local pet stores, schools, or retail
stores/malls and tell them about NERR&R and that you would like to hold a Rottweiler Day at their location. You
can have one with or without adoptable dogs, depending on the location and type of establishment. The main theory
of an RD is to promote awareness of our organization and homeless Rottweilers, to provide the public with information
on responsible dog ownership and to sell merchandise and get donations for NERR&R.
- Call establishment and ask to speak to a manager. Introduce yourself as a volunteer of NERR&R and that you are
inquiring about holding an event at their location. Tell them about NERR&R:
NERR&R adheres to the following objectives:
- Educate with regard to responsible ownership including but not limited to training, husbandry, breeding and
health practices.
- Preserve the Rottweiler breed through education, rescue, placement and other services.
- Rescue and re-home Rottweilers who are not a detriment to the breed.
- Offer consults to people with Rottweilers having difficulty finding housing or insurance.
- Assist other rescue organizations in their endeavor to achieve similar goals.
North East Rottweiler Rescue and Referral Inc. extends its services to animal shelters, veterinary hospitals and
the general public in an effort to raise public awareness of responsible Rottweiler ownership. NERR&R rescues unwanted
and abandoned Rottweiler dogs and places them into appropriate, permanent homes. NERR&R promotes responsible ownership
by providing free educational services. These services include pre-purchase counseling, behavior consultations and
evaluations, as well as breeder, trainer and insurance referrals.
- Establish a date with the manager. Usually RDs are from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. Check with the manager if they will
provide you with a table and chairs. If not you need to have something that you can bring with you to set up with.
There are some NERR&R tablecloths or banners floating around. If you cannot locate one, please make a nice poster
board up so that people walking by can identify what you are doing there.
- Advertise your RD! Post flyers in local places (Rottweiler
Day Flyer). You can also send press releases to local papers. Check
http://newslink.org/manews.html
for contact information for papers in your area. There is a sample press release located
here.
- Notify other volunteers in your area that you need help for this date and time. Also ask foster parents if
their dogs are available to attend (if establishment will allow dogs). 1-2 dogs are good; make sure you have a
good ratio of volunteers to dogs. Also crates are recommended if possible in case the dog is overwhelmed and needs
some time out.
- Find a volunteer who has merchandise who can attend or make arrangements to get some merchandise from them.
- Let Deb know the date, time, location and what dogs are
going to be present, also providing directions is a plus - to update the website.
- Print out the following documents to bring with you (all can be found on the Volunteer page)
a. Listing and pictures of available dogs (see Adoptable Dogs page)
b. NERR&R Brochures
c. Adoption Applications
d. Foster Applications
e. Volunteer Applications
f. NERR&R Vols needed flyer
g. Also bring business cards if you have them.
- Make sure all foster dogs in attendance have their rabies certificates with them. As the organizer of the event,
this is your responsibility.
- Contact numbers in case of emergency:

- Dog bite incidents:
- Remove the dog from the area (ie put in car)
- Take care of any needed medical attention
- Contact a member of the BOD (a list of the BOD members and their contact info should be present at all RDs).
- If the dog bites and no report is made, leave a copy of the rabies certificate and NERR&R Contact info with the
store manager, then take the dog and leave.
- If a report IS made, have the ACO or PO speak to a member of the BOD. Dog will be quarantined in accordance with
the direction of the local PD or ACO.
- BOD Contact List (above)
- Print out a merchandise sell sheet
a. Be sure to record all merchandise sold and donations acquired.
- Always be polite and friendly to anyone who comes to talk to you! When you see people glancing over at your,
invite them over and tell them about NERR&R. Try to answer any questions they have. Give them some brochures or
business cards to take with them. If people are unpleasant, be cordial and try to explain to them what their
disagreement is and help them to understand why we do what we do.
- Once the day is complete, send in merchandise sheet and monies to:
NERR&R
PO Box 510
